How do i do this math? PLEASE

[From: ] [author: ] [Date: 11-06-28] [Hit: ]
If you didnt have to factor it, then,......
i dont know what this kind of math is called or how to do it.
help? anyone? please?
i put these ^ to show it is an exponent

f(-2)= (-2)^2-6(-2)+9
--------------------
(-2)^2-9

-
It's called algebra (f(x) means function of x).

f(-2) = (-2) ^2 - 6(-2) + 9
f(-2) = 4 + 12 + 9
f(-2) = 25

(-2)^2 - 9 //I am guessing that you have to factor this.

You can rewrite the above problem as (-2) ^ 2 - (3) ^2

There is a little identity property that states that a^2 - b^2 = (a + b) (a - b)
So, take a = -2 and b = 3
Then, it will equal:
(-2 + 3) (-2 - 3)

If you didn't have to factor it, then, you would probably have to solve it:
(-2)^ 2 - 9 = 4 - 9 = -5

-
(4+12+9)/(4-9)

25/-5

-5
