you realize that from June 6th until June 10th youll be short on the amount of raw materials you need to run the plant at maximum efficiency for the whole 40 hour work week. You are, however, employing many poor folks in Nowhereistan that are counting on you for their paychecks, so you cant simply shut the plant down for a day at the end of the week or some of them might be in real trouble. Instead,......
So you've got a company in Nowhereistan that just bought some new manufacturing equipment. As long as you have the raw materials for the machines, you can keep pouring them in and producing your product at a steady rate. The manufacturing plant regularly runs it's machines at 100% of their operating capabilities (as defined by the rate at which it produces a finished product from raw materials) for 8 hours a day, 5 days a week.

Unfortunately, you realize that from June 6th until June 10th you'll be short on the amount of raw materials you need to run the plant at maximum efficiency for the whole 40 hour work week. You are, however, employing many poor folks in Nowhereistan that are counting on you for their paychecks, so you cant simply shut the plant down for a day at the end of the week or some of them might be in real trouble. Instead, you decide to have the machines run at 80% of their normal operating speed, thereby allowing your proud employees to work a full week and earn a full week's pay.

Shortly after this, one of your machines breaks down, and you fly in a specialist to repair it. While he's there, you ask him to take a look at your other machines to make sure that they're all in good shape too, and he makes a discovery: You've been running your machines improperly the whole time. What you thought was 100% of your machines' operating capacity was actually only 85%!

So the question is; at what percent of their total operating capacity were you running your machines from June 6th to June 10th?

Is the answer 68%? Or if it's not, what is it and how did you figure it out?
