Does 6/2 (1+2) equal 9 or 1
[From: ] [author: ] [Date: 11-04-29] [Hit: ]
6 / 2(1+2) = 1 because 1 + 2 = 3, then 2 x 3 = 6, then 6 / 6 = 1.Its only 9 if you divide 6 by 2 first to get 3, and then add 1 and 2 to get 3, and then multiply them.......
Further, if you put this on a calculator as 6÷2(1+2) it gives you an answer of 1.

It is 1. You always do what is in the parentheses first! So, 6 / 2(1+2) = 1 because 1 + 2 = 3, then 2 x 3 = 6, then 6 / 6 = 1. It's only 9 if you divide 6 by 2 first to get 3, and then add 1 and 2 to get 3, and then multiply them. But that's WRONG. Parentheses first, ALWAYS, and what's next to the parentheses, before you deal with other division or multiplication.
So:
(1 + 2) = 3
2 (3) = 6
6 / 6 = 1
But it's written wrong anyway. Someone laid that out wrong just to be confusing. So stupid.

The answer is obviously 1...
6/2(1+2)
=6/2(3)
=6/6
=1
For god's sake get a standard calculator out and type it in the exact same format.. You will get one...
Imagine the (3) is like an algebraic number, say A.
so 6/2A = 6/6 = 1. You multiply the 2 and A together first before dividing, not because of BEDMAS (that's what i learnt) but because when the 2 is right next to the brackets like that it takes priority.
6/2*(1+2) would be 9. again, just use a calculator if it doesn't come by common sense to you..
seems obvious and natural to me..

6÷2(1+2)=?
Team 9: “THE ANSWER IS 9”
Those who argue that the answer is 9 follow standard order of operations:
6/2(1+2)
First you do whatever is in the parentheses which is (1+2):
6/2(3)
Next, you do multiplication and division in order from left to right, so you devide 6 by 2 and then multiply the result by 3. The parentheses are not needed as 2(3) only indicates 2x3:
3(3) = 9
Team 1: “THE ANSWER IS 1”
Those who argue that the answer is 1 follow order of operations, but accept that multiplication by juxtaposition indicates that the juxtaposed values must be multiplied together before processing other operations:
6/2(1+2)
First you do whatever is in the parentheses which is (1+2):
