Why is bass the most appealing frequency

I know, and most everybody also knows, that everybody loves bass. Personally I'm not too crazy about it. When I listen to music, I prefer 320kbps+ files, headphones with a wide soundstage and an unbiased response. Overwhelming bass causes a lot of pressure to build up in my eardrums and gives me a headache. Overwhelming highs also give me a headache. The frequency range that I truly love is the mid range. In fact, the equalization of a song can change my opinion as to whether I like it or not.

What I want to know is, from somebody with audio engineering experience or acoustics experience to explain to me, why is bass so appealing to the human ear? Also, do you prefer lows to the other frequencies?

People who are excited or discoursing in disagreement tend to emit higher frequency sounds whereas relaxed people communicating in general agreement and harmony tend to emit lower tones. Lower tones signal relaxation, agreeability and lack of stress to the human receptor.

It is for this reason also that a low pitched gravelly voice is preferred in presenters.

I personally agree with this observation although it does not occasion me to boost the bass when listening to music - I prefer to hear that as close as possible to how it was intended.

The appeal of Bass [50Hertz, or lower] is because it can be felt thru the bones of your body. A truly deaf person can "sense" a sound at bass level.

Bass's other property is it can travel farther distances, then the higher frequencies. Whales communicate with each other by different Bass frequency, even if they are halfway around the world.
