The image sensor employed by most digital cameras is a charge coupled device (CCD). Some cameras use complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) technology instead. Both CCD and CMOS image sensors convert light into electrons in an array of pixels, perhaps 4000 by 3000, for a total of 12 million pixels. The voltage on each cell, pixel of the array is converted into a digital number, so you have 12 million digital numbers, in total forming the image.
