Most all of the problems you read about nuclear reactors are from reactors designed befor 1970 using designs frozen by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. To say the least, designs have been improved by computers, computer controls and experience. Payback for nucs is about 30 years!
Coal plants are very simple, give off tremendous amounts of CO2, SO2, and mercury. There is radioactive elements in coal and coal plants give off more radiation than nuc. plants!! How about gas? Cheap? Maybe. Did you ever have a pipeline explode in your community? We did! My fire dept. found a leak in a pipeline that ran "low Pressure" (about 900 psi.) No sweat said the gas company. Piece of cake. 10 times the pressure in your propane tank and you should see what one of them does in a fire. We evaced about 4 square miles with the usual hard line," leave us with your next of kin info." When you look at the worse case info---What to do with the waste. Put it in the repositories already built. Politics has rallyied the people not to let it cross their state. Don't fall for that. Canada has too much hydro power for nucs, to be profitable. Sorry. But when all the good sites are gone, Canada has all the uranium it needs for nuc. plants.

Short term economic activity and that's it.
If it is not subsidized the power generated is very expensive.
Mining, processing and using radioactive material is environmentally destructive, damages people to.
You are left with wastes which are dangerous for 1000's of years and a huge plant which is radioactive enough to damage human health.
Then there is the whole accident issue. I though about the effects of nuclear war then I thought about the effects of 6-10 Chernobyl's created by conventional bombing during a war when there is no time or resources to deal with them....killed off with a whimper not a bang.
