You could use handheld laser thermometer. Read temperature at distances without contact wit surface if you ca afford one.

Perhaps the thin plastic film type indicators that show a number in Degrees C as they heat up. Usually seen in gift and novelty shops, these are surely the most appropriate type to monitor circuit boards.

Possibly Maplin or Radiospares sell them.

why not jst use a bead thermistor connected to a DVM..u can calibr8 it in say ice an boiling water and plot a Rvs T curve..
