What is a neutralisation reaction? give an example. (4 marks)?

answers:
electron1 say: A neutralization reaction occurs when and acid and base react. In chemistry class, the most common acid is hydrochloric acid. The most common base is sodium hydroxide. The products are sodium chloride and water.

HCl + NaOH → NaCl + H2O

At home, most people have vinegar and baking soda. Vinegar is a dilute solution of acetic acid. The products are sodium acetate, carbon dioxide, and water.

Acetic acid = HC2H3O2
Baking power = NaHCO3

HC2H3O2 + NaHCO3 → NaC2H3O2 + CO2 + H2O

You will see the bubbles of carbon dioxide rising in the solution. I hope these are helpful

pisgahchemist say: Neutralization .....

The reaction of an acid and a base. In the Arrhenius theory, a salt and water are the products. In the more general Bronsted-Lowry theory, the products are a conjugate acid and a conjugate base.

An acid and a base can neutralize each other
... HCl(aq) + NaOH(aq) --> NaCl(aq) + HOH(l)
or an acid can be neutralized by a compound which doesn't even have to produce hydroxide ions
... HNO3(aq) + Na2CO3(aq) --> NaNO3(aq) + CO2(g) + H2O(l)

david say: An acid reacts with a base to form a salt and water

Ex .. HNO3 + NaOH --> NaNO3 + H2O
