How can i remember chemical reactions in my book and how should i remember functional groups?

I like to construct flow charts and spider diagrams that start with a reactant in the middle. For example an alcohol or calcium carbonate. Then around it I draw arrows with all the possible reactions that the reactant can undergo like oxidation, decomposition, hydration etc. It does really help me but some people find it tedious to draw them out.

There are some things you just have to remember. The best way is by constant use.
When you learnt to talk did you ask your mum "How do I remember all these words"? No! You just used them and by use they stuck.
