If I was to set up an exothermic reaction and it was say 20 deg c before I began, would the temperature go up or down after the reaction has taken place?
I am a little puzzled because I know that an exothermic reaction gives out heat, I'm not sure if 'giving' out heat would leave the temperature lower overall or higher?

the Chemicals release energy which goes into the thermal energy of surrounds and temperature goes UP!

yeah the heat given out decreases the temp. of the chemical or the system but INCREases the temp. of the surroundings due to heat and energy...
