Why is glass always used when undergoing reaction? Aren't some reactions too extreme for glass to handle? For example, the synthesis of benzene requires heat applied to sodium benzoate and sodium hydroxide. Will glass handle that temperature or will you need a steel container? If so, why aren't steel containers common?

Because glass has got less thermal expansivity. Also in the rex^ns it is required to check volume and colour of the compound that are either solid or liquid. Too glass shows no chemical change to any compounds.
