Why should the Space Race be remembered in the future

irrational squabbles. We should not make excuses or blame each other for our failure to solve problems, but instead should simply make the decision to solve them, as we did in our decision to go to the moon.-Sadly it will be remembered as a grab for glory. The USA set itself the goal of landing a man on the moon.......
It should serve as a reminder that humans can achieve amazing things when they work together on a common, rational goal. It was less than 12 years from the time the first satellite orbited the earth to the time a human first set foot on the moon. We should remember this in the midst of our petty, irrational squabbles. We should not make excuses or blame each other for our failure to solve problems, but instead should simply make the decision to solve them, as we did in our decision to go to the moon.

Sadly it will be remembered as a grab for glory.
The USA set itself the goal of landing a man on the moon.
Having achieved the goal, there was no more goal.
A goal is needed.
Primarily to keep Congress voting for funds. And Congress won't vote for funds unless the general populace is motivated.

So when the goal was to beat the Soviets (Russians) to the moon, then all was well.

And I guess the lesson will not be 'learned' until we find a new goal. A goal that is lofty and idealistic, without ever being achievable.

It was the beginning of humans trying to leave the planet. In a hundred, a thousand, a million years, it will be a legend, something like the Viking sagas.
