what is the ground state electron configuration of a Fe atom (#26)?
I have the answer, which is 1s22s2 etc. (sorry, i'm not sure how to right powers on Y!A) Anyway, how did they know to write it out like this? Anybody know of a good website that teaches this?

The electron configuration for an element is the arrangement of electrons in the orbits (or shells) of a neutral atom. Shells closer to the nucleus have higher binding energy.
