I was wondering if organic chemistry required a lot of general chemistry knowledge. My prof for general chem is unknown and she could be terrible, so i was wondering even if i bombed gen chem (i shouldn't) would it be a problem in organic?
thanks

Wouldn't think so!
I got C's in gen chem. Both of them. Gen chem is ALL math formulae.
I got A's in both organic courses. Organic is all x+y=Z, and you have to reason why which specific atoms will move, when, and what they make. Nomenclature, being able to name compounds by just looking at their structure, is 1/2 the game. I thought it was MUCH easier than gen chem.
Almost no math involved.
Good luck!

Chemistry is a very broad subject. Gen. Chem and O'Chem are both different type of chemistry and I would say that a solid background in General Chemistry is very important for learning Organic Chemistry. I have taken O'Chem and it is a hard class and also depends who is your teacher. It does require a lot of time from you.
Organic Chemistry is the study of Organic compounds, or the study compounds that are Carbon based (i.e. propane, benzene, enzymes, etc) Here you will learn how carbon forms different bonds with other atoms, the mechanism of how the reaction takes place for about 100 different reactions and learn to read spectra (IR, MS, H-NMR).
General Chemistry is an overview of a lot of different topics in chemistry. You will study Inorganic, Physical, Organic, and Analytic Chemistry in Gen. Chem.

Organic chemistry involves a lot of basic chemistry like acid-base reactions, molecular orbital theory, valence bond theory, etc. It just get more specific with the molecules in the reaction with organic chemistry like it is grouped (alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, alkyl halides, alcohols, etc.).
