I'm working on a lab for ap biology. In the lab, we used fruit flies to study genetics. They are a good species to use because they:
1. have simple food requirements
2. occupy little space
3. have a short life cycle (12 days)
4. produce large numbers of offspring quickly
5. can be immobilized
6. has many distinct traits that can easily seen under a low-powered microscope
My question for you guys is, what are some other organisms that fit this criteria, particularly meeting criteria 4,5, and 6?

Try the insect groups. Especially fruit flies. They are small, occupy little space have a short life cycle, produce large numbers of off spring quickly, immobilize easy, and have distinct traits seen under a low powered microscope. Eye color. check them out! Good Luck! http://images.search.yahoo.com/search/im…

My genetics teacher liked to use corn. That's really all I remember him talking about.
