What odd experiments were conducted on animals and what was their purpose

The things people do are interesting! Also sorry if this belongs in zoology instead. Im up for any science-related story youve got, though! Whether its about experiments or not!Oh,......
I recently saw this: http://imgur.com/6fDax (Only the first two images are real)
-and when I asked my dad if the Russians actually attempted to keep a dog's head alive through a machine I was surprised to see him respond like it was common knowledge. Now I've been wondering what other crazy experiments have been conducted and why? Any that you know of. If you know other stuff about the dog experiment (Don't forward me to the video- as soon as I saw the dog I regretted it) you could tell me that, too, because I would like to know things like how long the dog stayed alive and what would happen if the experiment was a success, etc.

I hope I don't sound creepy asking about this. The things people do are interesting! Also sorry if this belongs in zoology instead. I'm up for any science-related story you've got, though! Whether it's about experiments or not!

Oh, and I've heard more than once that if you go to space, you'll see bodies. Is that true, though? Are there a bunch of random objects floating in orbit? Do things is space last longer than things on the Earth?

First of all, I'd like to say that the images are a hoax.
Looking at it from a biological perspective, our understanding of neurobiology is still so limited that we only have a vague notion of which area of the brain controls which area of our bodies.
Looking at it from a mechanical perspective, the machinery is too simple to be able to sustain a brain. The machinery needed would fill a large room.
Looking at it from a digital artist's perspective, the first image is photoshopped; the head and body of the dog has a resolution that is higher than the surrounding area, and shows the signs of poorly inserted images.
Experiments that have been conducted on animals are numerous, and I don't have any authority or knowledge to list them all.
And yes, you'd likely find dead bodies in space, but it is unlikely to meet any if you go up there, and most of the dead bodies will be in old Russian cosmonaut uniforms. There has been many casualties in the Russian space program of the past, almost none of which has been released to the public, and those that were are very obscure.
Space is filled with a vaccuum. Because most of the pods the cosmonauts were in has probably ruptured from the pressure difference, the bodies would most likely be completely preserved, as decay requires oxygen, and there is almost none in space.
