As liquid water freezes, the molecules arrange themselves in a way that takes up more space than liquid water. What would most likely occur if the arrangement of frozen water molecules required less space than that of liquid water molecules?

A. Ice would form in layers, and liquid water would get trapped in between the layers.

B. Liquid water would have a higher specific heat, making it less likely to undergo vaporization.

C. The density of ice would be greater than the density of liquid water, and ice would not float.

D. The freezing point of water would decrease, making ice more difficult to form.

Okay, so what this question is on is really the density of the solids/liquids in question. So if you have the same amount of fluid that then becomes a solid you haven't lost or gained any particles of the fluid (in a perfect world anyway). Density is principally responsible for what does or doesn't float. Since density is related to the amount of particles (stuff) in a solid (or liquid) lets turn to the example of water.

Water, when it freezes, takes up more space as a solid than it does as a liquid. Same number or particles, but takes up more space and is thus less dense. Since things that are less dense will float on things that are more dense we get ice cubes that float on water.

Consider the opposite now. If (in some magic theoretical world) water, when it froze, took up less space than water when it was liquid that would mean that the solid water would be more dense than the liquid water. It would therefore sink to the bottom.
