What is the function of the mucus? I was going through my notes and found that mucus catches any particles that "hair" was not able to catch and then moisten it. Is this right? if so what happens to the bacteria once it is moistened?

Mucus has a number of functions, depending on species and location in the body. It provides protection from drying in animal tissues that are exposed to air. It provides protection from chemicals and parasites inside and outside the body. It provides lubrication in many species including most fishes, flatworms, and land snails and provides lubrication in animal intestines. In some species, modified mucus glands produce toxins for protection from predators. Finally, mucus is good for catching things. We use it to catch particles that shouldn't go into the lungs but clams use mucus to catch tiny food particles that they then gather up and swallow. Mucus is awesome.

Normally, lubrication of the digestive and respiratory tracts. But increased nasal mucus production is an effort by the body to flush out foreign materials, either potentially infective organisms, or irritating substances.

It comes out through your nose or mouth.
