afferent means "to convey towards the centre" , since sensory neurones carry impulse to the CNS (central nervous system i.e. brain and spinal cord) so they are also known as afferent neurones.
efferent means "to convey from centre" , so since motor neurones carry impulse FROM CNS, they are also called efferent neurones.
hope this helps. :)

afferent neuorone carries an impules or signal towards the central nervous system, and so would be used to signal a sense being stimulated, eg touch.
