In both animals and plants, mitochondria (the "powerhouse" organelle) breaks down carbohydrates (which are macromolecules) into ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate) which holds a high amount of energy in it's molecule's bonds. ATP is used by cells within an organism as the main source of energy for the organism, such as muscle cells which need ATP energy to contract and perform motion.
In most autotrophs such as plants, they have an organelle called chloroplast which creates carbohydrates through photosynthesis by converting solar energy to chemical energy (which is stored in the bonds of the formed carbohydrates) and then later broken down by mitochondria to supply energy for the organism.
