spot a say: That is a hypothesis, not a theory as it has zero supporting evidence. There is lots of evidence for the asteroid theory

Roger K say: Nonsense.

Frank say: The idea is that the more-or-less 250 million years between major extinctions is the amount of time it takes for intelligent life to evolve, spread between the stars, and then engage in interstellar war and kill itself off. The Chicxulub asteroid crater is simply the convenient method used on an outlying base. This is a hypothesis that was talked about in the halls at scientific meetings in the 1970s, but never formally written up. The "interstellar" part is a wee bit far out, but not the "self-extinction" part, I fear.

Funnelweb say: It is quite illogical. If we are talking about two alien races from different star systems it makes almost no sense that they would come to Earth just to fight a war. If they were engaged in all-out war they would be attacking each other's home planetary system, they wouldn't be worried about ours.

A remote possibility is that they were engaged in a limited war: they would each send an army to a location away from their home planets and agree that the issue would be settled by whoever won the war. They might have picked our planet because (at the time) it had no intelligent life but was habitable. However if aliens can agree on a "trial by combat" they could also agree on resolving the issue without any bloodshed at all, and without sending an army and weapons many light years away.
