Of course the batteries on all these instruments have long since run down but what DOES still work is the laser mirrors. A few of those were left behind and a mirror doesn't need power to work. Fire laser pulses at them and measure how long the light takes to come back. We know the speed of light, so that gives you the exact distance to the Moon. This has been done regularly and it shows, to a high level of accuracy, that the Moon is moving away from us very slowly. Did you see the episode of "The Big Bang Theory" where the guys did this?
