there is a small atmosphere but too small to sustain any life ... we dont need to kill a monkey to measure the atmosphere.. you could use scientific methods.. including taking a sample of the atmosphere when the apollo missions were landed there.. (not saying they did that just that they could have.. )

It wouldn't be at all necessary to do so. Any craft capable of delivering a monkey could more easily carry instrumentation capable of detecting an atmosphere and measuring its composition.
