Is the spherical shape just an approximation? or does it work because gases are spherical "drops"?
Rayleigh Scattering is just limited to gas particles, correct?

Correct, BUT liquid water scatters sunlight too, but it's called the Tyndall effect. . The SIZE, diameters of the molecules of the gas are liquid is what determines wat wavelengths of light are scattered, Blue green light has the SAME wavelengths as the diameters of N2 and O2. The diameter of water molecules is why clouds are white or shades of gray.
