Right now, Mars sets in the west around 11 pm and Venus rises in the east around 3 am.
So the red "star" wasn't Mars - it could be any number of stars. When its close to the horizon a star will appear more red than when its higher in the sky - this is due to the blue wavelengths of light being refracted by our atmosphere (the same thing that makes sunsets red).
You can use the free software Stellarium to find out for your location - since you don't say where you are in the world its hard to know which stars you saw.
