I hear current estimates put it at 5 billion years away, which gives us plenty of time to devise a way to save it. It's never too early to start preparing.

That's like asking how do you stop a car from running out of gas. The only way would be to replace all the helium in the sun's core with fresh hydrogen. Basically an impossible task. Just adding more hydrogen would speed up the sun's death by increasing its mass. You'd have to drop a 400,000 mile hose into the sun's 15 million degree core, and pump out the old material while adding new, at a rate of at least 600 million tons per second. Anyone with that kind of ability probably wouldn't even need a planet to live on anymore.

Well, the Sun is a million times as large as the Earth, and it is so dense it takes photons 100 000 years to travel from the core where they are generated to the surface, before they travel the 8 1/3 minutes through space to Earth. There is no way to affect its nuclear furnace (if it takes 100 000 years for a photon to penetrate, nothing we can send at the Sun would be absorbed especially since it would be going against that photonic pressure gradient), and there is no way we can remove enough mass to make any difference, unless you have a spaceship that can move black holes.

If you didn't realize by now, if humanity makes it anywhere near 5 billion years into the future, we won't be humans anymore.

You can't stop the Sun. Your only viable option is to find a way to move the Earth farther away!

We cannot is the answer. Maybe in billion years we will know a way. But right now, there is NOT known way to stop it.
