Finally, you might want to make sure anything of historical value that you can save will be saved. It will be essential to future generations, who are trying to rebuild humanity. They will want to have technology to base things off and an example of what previous government systems were like.

Mostly you really only require the basics. Food, water, shelter, and a way to protect it from being taken from you. Of course if things got really bad you would also need a way to cook your food and keep warm in the winter. If you lose your job you are not going to be able to pay for electric and gas.

You might read "Dies The Fire" by S.M.Sterling a science fantasy about the survival efforts of 3 groups in Oregon that positively organize and another that attempts to dominate by force when an unknown force instantly makes all electricity and all high velocity power (guns and gasoline, etc.) stop in March of 1998. Thousands die as planes and automobile crash and panic breaks out then millions die as food can no longer be delivered and disease spreads. The book, first of a trilogy that covers about 20 years, is involved with a group of Wicca (witches) who create armed farmsteads, a group of macho types that create a free lance trading cavalry that fights bad guys for a fee, and a university city-state as well as the villain who uses recreational feudal skills to ruthlessly organize existing thugs and conquer Portland and area around it - capturing farmland.

1. Water filter. (Safe drinking water might well be the first thing to 'go'
and you 'survive' the least time without it.)
2. Dried concentrated portable food.
3. Means of transport. (Areas of high population concentration would be least 'livable'.)
4. Portable shelter.
