A red giant is a star that has used up all of its hydrogen and helium fuels, and has rapidly expanded. This is part of the normal star process, and this will happen to our sun in about 5 billion years.

The red giant that the sun will expand to will most likely engulf all of the inner planets, including Mercury, Venus, and Earth.
