What is a good telescope for a beginner

i am taking a class on Astronomy and im an very interested. Im looking for a good telescope around $100 If possible. Thank you

I am afraid that "$100" and "good telescope" represent a contradiction in terms with no clear resolution. In order to get a reasonably decent telescope, you will have to spend about 3 times your current budget, and probably more like 4 once you get the extra stuff that is needed to really observe anything with it.

Binoculars are not a bad choice to start. It is quite surprising what can be seen through a decent 10x50 binocular: moons of Jupiter, beautiful star clusters and nebulae, lunar features etc etc.

As others have said, you really cannot get a good telescope for $100. Even a good pair of binoculars will cost more than that. I have another suggestion for you. Pay for a subscription to either "Astronomy" or "Sky and Telescope" magazine & join a local astronomy club (if you join first, you may be able to save money on the subscription purchased through the club). As a club member, you'll have access to a wide range of equipment that you can't afford & can take advantage of the club member's experience. Whenever the club does their stargazing (usually around the new Moon) plan on participating & you'll get to view through their equipment. I'd be very surprised if you weren't able to check out a refractor, Newtonian reflector, & a Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope.

For a budget of $100, you are way better getting a decent set of binoculars.
