Why is everyone so scared of 2012

My 5 year old just came up to me saying, he's scared of the world ending in 2012!
What's up with all this 2012 bogus?

It is a HOAX and a lot of people are falling for it.

Nibiru has passed and was visible in the sunrise and sunset. Best Iv'e found, is Google sky. See for yourself. Go to Google.com/sky- type in search horsehead nebula. zoom out three times and look to the bottom left by the numbers. You will see a blacked out square... only one in google sky.

Unfortunately, your child is at the age where no one can fault him for believing this crap, particularly when it appears on once-reputable networks as the History channel, which still maintain a thin veneer of being 'educational'. I'm afraid that this hoax has been brewing pretty much since Nancy Lieder's May 2003 Planet X doomsday hoax tanked. These people have discovered that crying doom can be profitable; it gets attention, sells books, and even creates a market for (highly dubious) survival supplies.

It's nothing new, though. There has always been some simpleton screaming that the end is nigh. The internet has given them more of a voice lately, particularly with YouTube serving as a venue by which anyone can splooge out a "documentary". The charlatans and attention-seekers have gotten quite good at exploiting it.

I would start by pointing out to your son that there is a LONG history of people lying about this sort of thing, and that in the time he's been alive, he's lived through a number of significant doomsday predictions already. Hell, there were a number for this year.

Because the mayans died out or left before they could continue there calender could be continued, people presumed that was them predicting the end of the world, so people have extended that and made the entire world scared.
