Will an alien outer space civilization more likely to evolve from a predator

[From: ] [author: ] [Date: 11-04-28] [Hit: ]
Our ancestors were most likely not predators until they first learned to hunt with tools. Before that we learned to travel in packs and communities to benefit our survival so that when a predator came we were not forced to face it alone. We created tools to kill and hunt with because we were not natural predators. We werent strong enough to take down large game, we werent fast enough to hunt down small game, the only way we would have survived up to this point in history have been if our diets had consisted mostly of vegetation.......
I guess if there are intelligent advanced civilizations our there, they would more than likely evolve from a predator species like us, so more than likely it would not be good for us to contact them?

I disagree.

Human beings evolved from primates, and we are on a short list of primates that are omnivorous. Our ancestors were most likely not predators until they first learned to hunt with tools. Before that we learned to travel in packs and communities to benefit our survival so that when a predator came we were not forced to face it alone. We created tools to kill and hunt with because we were not natural predators. We weren't strong enough to take down large game, we weren't fast enough to hunt down small game, the only way we would have survived up to this point in history have been if our diets had consisted mostly of vegetation. It was the fact that our intelligence was growing and that we preferred to live in communities that spawned the birth of civilization as we know it.

To quote Hawking "It is not clear yet whether intelligence is a necessary means of survival."

Think about it, if you are a predator, at the top of your food chain, big teeth, big claws, the last thing that would benefit your survival is a change in the status quo. Evolution does exactly that by nature. It is the natural way of letting animals that are better at surviving procreate more animals like itself. If an animal is already at the top of the food chain, it would have no incentive to evolve into something different unless it's food source was changing first. This means that there is no real gain from growing a bigger brain or living in groups, and without that i don't believe that there would be civilization.

We didn't evolve from a Predator species we evolved into one. The Universe is so gigantic that it is more than likely that there are billions of intelligent beings out there. With at least 200billion stars in our Galaxy and an estimated 200billion galaxies it is highly unlikely that we are the only sentient entities in the Galaxy let alone the Universe. The prospect of technologically capable beings stumbling on Earth is not very likely.
