The Standard Model of physics, which explains how sub-atomic particles interact with the four known forces of nature – gravity, electromagnetism and the strong and weak nuclear forces – predicts that the Higgs boson, if it exists, could also explain why things have a weight to them.
Professor Brian Cox of Manchester University said that if the results hold up to further analysis, and confirmation by a second experiment, "then it is RIP Standard Model".

I did a little searching to gain more familiarity, since I couldn't tell from your post when you meant the discovery happened. The most significant point I took from the article was they used a 3-sigma to conclude their findings. A 3-sigma is a method used in statistics that explains nearly every distribution falls within one of three percentages (68-95-99.7) away from the standard deviation. I hope you can see the inherent failure using such broad strokes. It's very possible Fermilab will discover evidence linking the Higgs to material interaction before the LHC has the chance to be fully operational, but improbable.
The problem is that the observed cross section is much larger than theory predicts (ie the event being captured occurs much more often than it should if theory was correct).
LHC just the begining, the next collider to be constructed in space! oh by the way i'm an athiest so the god particle doesnt matter.
