The Space Race between the USSR and USA.
-
I would say that both nations benefitted greatly by way of technological advancement from it. Thus far, the US has gone much, much further, though the Russians are presently in the odd position of dominating manned orbital launches due to the Space Shuttles having been inefficient, extravagant hangar queens and the failure of the US to produce a manned replacement for it.

It is pure fact who won the space race. The United States' Apollo missions won the race.
But you could also say that the race didn't end there. USSR doesn't have functional vehicles on the surface of Mars do they?
Countless sattelites in the far reaches of our solar system sending back immeasurable amounts of data.
----------------------------
MIR was a much bigger achievement than a first sattelite or first man in space. I wonder why nobody mentioned that.

technically the USSR won because they beat us by getting a space probe into space first (Sputnik). And also before us, the Soviets sent a man into orbit around Earth (Yuri Gagarin), he didnt actually control the spacecraft but he was inside of it when it was orbiting Earth. The Soviets even beat us to the Moon first but with an unmanned probe (Luna 2) this was in 1959 (10 years before the US made it to the moon)
so in my opinion the USSR won
but in 1969, in a manned spacecraft (Apollo 11) the US one upped the Soviets by putting a man on the moon first, (Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins)

the u.s. may have won the battle with the apollo missions but russia has clearly won the war. within a few months the u.s. is abandoning manned spaceflight forever when the shuttle retires. the u.s. is building nothing to replace it and will never have any way to launch astronauts into space again once the shuttle is gone.
