Tomatoes are fruits prove me wrong?

answers:
Zz Games say: Tomatoes are technicaly berries but fruit is close enough
-

Steve H say: To me tomatoes are vegetables and always have been.
Apparently humans have known this for thousands of years.
Twit scientists just redefined what it meant to be a fruit or vegetable.
I can taste the difference .......

I know 99% of people will disagree, but I stand by the opinion that a tomato is a vegetable and no one will ever change my mind.

Has anyone questioned why we should pay those twit scientists ongoing wages or grants, to redefine some vegetables as fruits? Like for example; apparently because pumpkins contain seeds, they are also defined as a fruit.
How ridiculous!
I can tell that pumpkin is a vegetable by the flavour.

Who are these "Johnny come lately" scientists?
What sort of education did they receive to come up with this absurd concept?
Why should we continue to fund their research?

Raymond say: Etymologically, a "vegetable" is any plant, or part of the plant that can be eaten. rhubarb (a stem) is a vegetable. Potato (the root) is a vegetable. Tomato (the fruit part that can be eaten) is a vegetable. And so on.
Some vegetables are fruits, some are stems, some are flowers, some are roots, some are leaves, some are...

In the USA, the problem comes from a tax law (for customs, I think) that defines fruits and vegetables as two mutually exclusive categories. If something is a fruit, then it cannot be a vegetable (and vice versa).

Jim Moor say: A lot of foods that are (botanically speaking) fruits, but which are savory rather than sweet, are typically considered vegetables by chefs. This includes such botanical fruits as eggplants, bell peppers and tomatoes.

The fruit vs. vegetable debate can sometimes reach such a fever pitch that the law must step in. In the 1893 United States Supreme Court case Nix. v. Hedden, the court rule unanimously that an imported tomato should be taxed as a vegetable, rather than as a (less taxed) fruit. The court acknowledged that a tomato is a botanical fruit, but went with what they called the "ordinary" definitions of fruit and vegetable — the ones used in the kitchen.

Krishnamurthy say: To really figure out if a tomato is a fruit or vegetable,
you need to know what makes a fruit a fruit, and a vegetable a vegetable.
The big question to ask is, DOES IT HAVE SEEDS?
If the answer is yes, then technically, (botanically) you have a FRUIT.
This, of course, makes your tomato a fruit.
Scientifically speaking, a tomato is definitely a fruit.
True fruits are developed from the ovary in the base of the flower,
and contain the seeds of the plant (though cultivated forms may be seedless).
Blueberries, raspberries, and oranges are true fruits, and so are many kinds of nut.
