There are male and female jellyfish, with gonads that produce haploid gametes. Some jellies spawn, releasing male and female gametes into the seawater. Others release male gametes which are taken up by the female and delivered to the female gonad where fertilization takes place.

Jellyfish do NOT lay eggs. The male jellyfish/Medusa releases a sperm cell as the same as a female with an egg cell. The sperm and egg meet and attach into an enclosed round ball of mush, and then grows into a medusa.
