In laymans terms what does the God particle actually mean

Forgive me if I sound stupid but does it have to do with God or is it just a name that's been applied to it? I have read up on it but I don't really understand what they are explaining. Any help appreciated.

Sub-atomic particle Theory is (or was, until just now!) able only to explain 99.99% of why things are the way they are...formerly it could not account for the origins of "mass"...and Peter Higgs proposed a theoretical mechanism involving an observable "field", and an (as yet unseen) boson to "fill in the gaps" in the Standard Model.....it was dubbed the "God particle" because if we could FIND it, it would/should answer many very hard questions about why there is "something" rather than "nothing", and where (and why) matter arose in the first place...it would explain almost everything, or at the very least confirm that the Standard Model was more-or-less correct...

And now we have found it, and seen it!

This is a good question.
The God particle refers to gravity in particle form. This is a theory right now and in places like the Hedron Particle Collider much work is being done to test the hypothesis.

I could give you a long explanation but I think this video gives a very easy way to picture it :)
