In Chemistry what do the square brackets mean in an equilibrium expression?

They mean concentration, usually in mol/L.

If you have K = [A][B]/[C][D], you're going to need the concentrations of A, B, C, and D to calculate K.

They're just to separate the substances and make the indicies clearer to read I think :)
