Is air resistance a controlled, independent, or dependent variable

.im not sure though-It is a dependent variable.http://science.howstuffworks.A migrating whale follows the west coast of Mexico and North America toward its summer home in Alaska. It first travels 360 due northwest to just off the coast of northern California and then turns due north and travels 400 toward its destination.......
? please explain why..
i think its a dependent variable because it depends on velocity of a falling object but im not sure...it could also be an independent variable because you cant control it

im not sure though

-
It is a dependent variable. F=k*v^2

Looks like air resistance is a dependent variable

My question involves this problem:

A migrating whale follows the west coast of Mexico and North America toward its summer home in Alaska. It first travels 360 due northwest to just off the coast of northern California and then turns due north and travels 400 toward its destination.

I know that to find the magnitude you would use C = sqrt[A^2 + B^2 − 2AB cos γ]

The problem and solution are on this (number 3):

What I don't understand is why would -2ABcosy use 135 as the angle. It is not given in the problem?? To solve an obtuse angle like this shouldn't you be given side side angle?? We are not given an angle. How do you know that the angle y = 135??? On the picture it shows 45 so how do you know that the angle there is 45 can you just take 180 - 45 to give you 135???
