A current carrying coil of insulated wires wrapped around a piece of iron is called electro magnet

Hi friend Karthikha Rani, there are two magnets basically. One is permanent and the other one is temporary.
In case of bar magnets or horse shoe magnets, the magnetism is permanent.
But in case of a coil using insulated copper wire wound on a steel core, it would become magnetised temporarily whenever electric current passes through the coil. This kind of magnet is called as electro magnet. As soon as the current through the coil goes off, the magnetism would cease immediately. Such electro magnets are being used in electric bell equipment. Also in case of huge generators to produce electric current, we use only electromagnets.

This term is often applied to electromagnets, which are more commonly known as electromagnets.
