When I was 12, we lived in a haunted house, thought it would be cool to try to communicate. We got a ouija board. It was a toy, didn't really think it would do anything. Guess it's like a kid getting a medical kit, just toys, you don't really get a blood pressure, temps and such. So, me and my younger siblings played it, nothing happened at all. We may have done it either 2 or 3 times, the planchette never moved a bit. Activity in the house most certainly did pick up and it got so bad that my 8 y/o brother took it and burned it in the back yard. All hell broke loose then. Growling, brief stenches, had things fly across the rooms, very heavy and threatening feelings. It turned absolutely frightening. My mom called a priest to come bless the house. It settled down for maybe a couple of days, then it came back with a vengeance. We'd gone on a shopping trip one day, leaving our dog in the house. When we returned, she was outside and we wondered how she got out. Getting to the patio door, we saw the old sleeper sofa (the old, long, extremely heavy ones) laying on it's back, as was 2 other chairs. We were a little afraid to go inside, but, my mom and I went in to check the house out, once cleared, the siblings came in, the dog wouldn't though. We finally got the sofa back upright (no dog, I mean NO dog, could turn something like that over!) and got everything else straightened up and went to close the laundry room door (a pocket door), which was always kept close, and noticed claw marks, deep, all over the bottom part of it. The dog was evidently so frightened, she clawed the door until she could finally get through, she jumped on the washer, then dryer, then she bailed out through the closed window and screen. That tells me something happened enough for her to be that desperate to get out of the house. It happened after the ouija and house blessing, when things were at their worst.

I have used one several times. The first time was after I bought one at a school fair. A lot of times nothing seemed to happen. Then two different times it moved. We really didn't think anything of it and put it away in the cellar. After that sometimes you would hear footsteps coming up the basement stairs, the lights would pop, even the dogs would not go down there and sometimes they would stare down the steps and growl and bark. When we moved we left the ouija board there.
