What does it mean and where does the word come from. Also, who named us 'sapiens'
Most people will recognise this from the word Homo sapien which is a binomial nomenclature (scientific) name. The first word 'Homo' relates to the genus which the species belongs and the second word 'sapiens' relates to the actual species itself. So, why sapiens? Could someone explain its origin?
On the same subject, I'd also like to know why does the word 'Homo' define our genus? Whats the origin of this word too?

Okay dude this may sound nerdy . . . I can tell yea th origins and definitions as well as our whole classification system.
We are classified as Homo sapiens , the first word (Homo) is our genus and the second word (sapiens) is our species . (This I'm sure u already know.
Human classification:
Kingdom. : Animalia
Phylum. : Chordata
Class. : Mammalia
Order. : Primates.
Family. : Homonidae
Genus. : Homo
Species. : sapiens
Now to answer your question:
As we all know Latin is used for naming living organisms right?
Right , so in the classified name Homo sapien , Homo is derived from the word 'Man' and sapien is derived from the word 'wise' therefore you and I can conclude that the meaning of Homo sapiens is 'Wise man' or 'Man who is wise' .
Since our evolved species Homo sapiens have a higher intellect than our previous anscestors and we have the basic ability of brain power and since we are sed to be one of the most intelligent species in the world and we are wise and humans thus proves that we are true to the name Homo sapiens
Ja ne hope I've helped •♥•

Homo means "man" and "sapiens" means wise in latin.
The name Homo sapiens was probably invented by Carolus Linnaeus who invented the modern method of naming species.
