(Searing, burning, stabbing, dull, throbbing, etc.......
What's it feel like to dislocate your shoulder? What do you experience right when it happens?
What's the pain like? (Searing, burning, stabbing, dull, throbbing, etc.)
What happens at the hospital with a dislocated shoulder?

It's for my project for my health class. Thank you! (:

The feeling varies depending on the type of dislocation -- ie: Anterior, Posterior (the direction) -- the severity of the blow,.. one's individual pain threshold and the degree of nerve compression derived from the shoulder coming out of it's socket.

In general it is fairly painful -- You will feel immediate pain in the shoulder and upper arm that will cause pain when you move the area (whether it's your arm, or just shrugging your shoulder-girdle/collarbone).

Often there is some tingling from nerve compression of the dislocation that can travel down the arm into the fingers,.. possible numbness alone with pain and tingling. Many people report that initially it is quite difficult to breath immediately after dislocating the shoulder. Further, breathing often is painful as the torso moving causes some radicular movement of the dislocated area and aggravation of the nerves in the area.

The pain would not typically be a searing or burning sensation -- it would feel more like an initial stabbing intense pain,.. that likely would have throbbing present as swelling began due to the immune reaction to the damaged area.

The dislocation occurs when too much force is applied to the ligaments connecting the arm to the shoulder, and the bones are separated (subluxated). Literally the "ball" pops out the socket.

Symptoms are typically pain, swelling, deformity, warmth, bruising or redness of the area -- and difficulty using the injured area in a normal manner.

At the hospital :

Typical protocol would be to have some minor radiological imaging (ie: Xray(s)) to determine the exact positioning.
