I heard meth was used as a medicine before but I don't get how since meth is made in illegal factories using nasty chemicals....I'm sure doctors had a different formula right?

In The United States methamphetamine is a currently available prescription medication in The United Stated under the brand name Desoxyn (methamphetamine hydrochloride) in 5 mg tablets. It is also available in generic, manufactured by Mylan, also in 5 mg tablet strength. Desoxyn is FDA approved for the treatment of ADHD and exogenous obesity (obesity due to external factors).
Despite the availability of methamphetamine it is not commonly used and when it is used it tends to be used as a drug of last resort.
Methamphetamine is also very widely accepted for the treatment of narcolepsy and other primary hypersomnias. However like all amphetamines it is typically discouraged for Desoxyn to be prescribed for obesity, even though Desoxyn is the only amphetamine specifically indicated for obesity. Although in my opinion amphetamines, including methamphetamine, do have a limited roll in treatment of obesity and their are doctors that prescribe amphetamines that follow very strict protocols (ie using the medication short term (at most until they become tolerant to the anorexiant effects of the medication- typically no more than 2-6 weeks), as an adjunct to a comprehensive weight loss programme involving caloric restriction, dietary education, proper exercise structure, and psychotherapy (when needed) for patients with difficultly controlling their eating or who, for example, may eat as a coping mechanism. When all of these are followed medication like Desoxyn is significantly more effective, it is typically very safe (since good programmes monitor patients very closely) but for the most part people don't want to do the extra work or doctors just write a prescription without anything else.
