It's definitely not serotonin toxicity, however, the nightmares going into sleep that you are experiencing are very likely the result of serotonergic activity. Most people don't realize that diphenhydramine has weak activity as a serotonin reuptake inhibitor. In fact, Prozac was developed from the diphenhydramine molecule. Now, while an overdose on DPH won't cause serotonin toxicity, the effects that it has on serotonin, which is a major player in all aspects of sleep, are probably what is causing these hypnogogic nightmares.

Hypnogogia is a fancy word for the threshold between being awake and being asleep. It is during this phase that many odd phenomena such as lucid dreaming, hallucination, and out of body experiences occur, however, most people don't remember any of these because they forget when the go to sleep. Now, what I think is happening is that the diphenydramine's effect on your body is causing irregularities in your normal ability to stay asleep so that you are randomly popping in and out of consciousness. The irritability that you feel is the result of the diphenhydramine's unpleasant deliriant qualities and is also contributing to the nightmares.

DPH has a half-life of 9 to 12 hours in adults, so if you took 300mg yesterday, then 24 hours later you would still have around 75mg in your system, and in another 24 hours you will still have around 18.75mg. You may still feel weird for a few days after it's all out of you system because of the drug's effect on your brain chemistry, but you should be absolutely fine in a few days.
