Changing anti anxiety medication

I have been taking 5htp, a natural over the counter food supplement for anxiety however I have since been to the doctors twice, and they perscribed me to citalopram which is a prescribed anti anxiety medication. I didn't tell them about the 5htp though. I'm not sure what to do, whether to wait after my course of 5htp or start citalopram now, or even wait a little while inbetween just so nothing happens (like mixing)
Does anyone have any sensible advice?

stop the 5-HTP, wait for 2 weeks to let that get out of your system then start the citalopram.

You must NOT take 5-HTP and citalopram together as the combination may cause a dangerous and potentially life-threatening drug interaction.
Taking the two together or not waiting the full two weeks also puts you at risk of Serotonin syndrome, this is a dangerous condition that occurs as a result of too much serotonin in the brain.

I presume the 5htp is not working for you because you still consulted your physician about your problem and that's why you were prescribed the Citalopram. If that's the case, then you should stop the 5htp, call your physician and ask for advise on when you should start the prescribed medication. You should not take chances on taking both without letting your Physician know. Besides, you should have told your physician about it when you first consulted.
