Please help with maths problem

When the square number is decreased by 5 the result is 4 times the number. Find the number.

x squared -5 = 4x

x squared -4x -5 = 0

(x+1)(x-5)

the number can be either -1, or 5.

First you have to write out the numerical equation from the given word equation:

x² - 5 = 4x

Then simplify and solve:

x² - 4x - 5 = 0
(x-5)(x+1) = 0
x-5 = 0 and x+1 = 0
x = 5 and x = -1

So for this question, there are two answers; x = 5 and x = -1. :)

x^2- 5 = 4x where x is the number
x^2 - 4x - 5 = 0
(x - 5 )(x +1) = 0

either x - 5 = 0 in which case x = 5 or

x + 1 = 0 in which case x = -1

Both of these will satisfy your conditions.
