write the equation that describes the function

f(x)=1/3x+1

the graph passes through points (-3,0) and (0,1)

the eqn of a straight line, in slope intercept form is:

y = mx + n, with m the slope and n the intercept

the intercept is the point where the graph intersects the y axis

in our case, its (0,1) => 1 = m*0 + n => n = 1

the def of the slope, knowing 2 points on the line, is :

m = (y2 - y1)/(x2 - x1), with (x1,y1) and (x2,y2) the coordinates of the 2 points

in our case, (x1 = -3, y1 = 0) and (x2 = 0, y2 = 1)

hence, m = (1 - 0)/(0 + 3) = 1/3

having found m and n, the eqn of the graph in slope-intercept form is:

y = 1/3 * x + 1
