Age Word Problem...MATH

Mrs. Hill is 33 years older than her son. In 4 years she will be four times as old as her son. How old is each?

Let her son be s years old. She is s + 33 years old.

In four years time this becomes s + 4 and s + 37.

so, 4(s + 4) = s + 37

=> 4s + 16 = s + 37

=> 3s = 21

so, s = 7

i.e. their ages are 7 and 40

let age of Mrs. Hill to be x, her son is y.

x - y = 33 -- (1)
(x+4) = 4(y+4) - (2)

from (1), we have x = 33 + y, plug in to (2)

(33+y+4) = 4(y+4)

37 + y = 4y + 16

21 = 3y

y = 7

x = 33+7 = 40

Mrs. Hill is 40 years old, and her son is 7 years old.

PERSON..............PRESENT AGE..............AGE IN 4 YEARS
**************************************…
SON.............................X.....… + 4
MOM........................X + 33...........................(X + 33) + 4

MOM = 4 * SON

X + 37 = 4(X + 4)

X + 37 = 4X + 16

37 = 3X + 16

21 = 3X

X = 7

SON.............................7....A…
MOM = 7 + 33 =........40....ANSWER
