How would I graph this

[From: ] [author: ] [Date: 11-12-20] [Hit: ]
..Put a point on the y-axis up 3 units.The slope is -1 / 3.........
Ok so I have to graph y = -1/3 x +3

How would I graph this?

Lisa, on the MIDPOINT question you said you wanted to contact me......
IF SO then you need to let me know an email address so I can send you mine.......

The 3 on the end is the y-intercept

Put a point on the y-axis up 3 units.

The slope is -1 / 3.......From that point on the y-axis move DOWN 1
......................................a… RIGHT 3
Make a POINT

Draw a LINE thru these two points. Let me know if you need to see this on skype.

I tutor free online since moving to France from Florida in June 2011.
Hope this is most helpful and you will continue to allow me to tutor you.
If you dont fully understand or have a question PLEASE let me know
how to contact you so you can then contact me directly with any math questions.
If you need me for future tutoring I am not allowed to give out my
info but what you tell me on ***how to contact you*** is up to you
Been a pleasure to serve you Please call again

First consider what x numbers are going to be interesting for this function.
x can be any number but usually people choose some numbers close to 0
like x = -6, -3, 0, 3, 6 for this one since they are multiplied by 1/3. (And numbers in between, might as well, but not necessary.)
Draw the x axis and y axis
Plot points that are on the line
x=0 -> y=3
x=3 -> y=2
x=6 -> y=1
x=-3 -> y=4
x= -6 -> y=6

Draw a line through the points.

Admire the perfect regularity of the line's slope.
Admire how the geometry of the line corresponds to numerical facts: any number you enter,
like x = 0.23 or x=1.55, or x = -2.5 when you multiply it by -1/3 and add 3 and count carefully on the grid, the point is on the line.
Admire the beauty and power of mathematics.
Unless you made mistakes when you were plotting the points and drawing the line :)

to graph any function you can do the simple table method
x | y = -1/3 x +3
------
0| 3
3| 2
6| 1

now plot those points and draw a line through them
done

to double check, go to wolframalpha and graph it there

-1/3 is the gradient.
3 is the y-intercept.
Then just find x when y=0 and find y when x=0.
It's a straight line graph by the way.

-
A straight line going down to the right, passing through the y axis at +3 and the x axis at +9.

-
It is a line of slope -1/3 and y-intercept 3. Graph it like you would any other line.
