OKAY, so... fractions are kind of like pieces of one thing. So if you were to cut a pizza in half, you'd have 2 halves of a pizza, so one of the pieces would be 1/2. 1 = that slice of pizza and 2 of those half slices = the whole pizza. Look at the top number (the numerator) as being that many pieces of the bottom number (the denominator).

Basics covered...

For multiplying fractions, multiply the two denominators and the two numerators. The denominators multiplied equals the denominator of your answer and vice versa. So like with problem (a) 1/2 x 1/2, you'd multiply the two 1's and then the two 2's, to get 1/4. You'd do the same for (b).

For multiplying fractions and whole numbers, what I do is I write the whole number in its fraction form, so like the 14 in problem (c) would be 14/1. You can use a 1 as a denominator for whole numbers. Then multiply 3/7 x 14/1.

Mixed fractions are numbers that have whole numbers and a fraction. So, for example, if you had 1 whole pizza and then 1/2 of a pizza, you'd have 1 1/2 pizzas. To multiply them by fractions, you'll need to convert the mixed number into an improper fraction. An improper fraction is a fraction that has a numerator larger than or equal to its denominator. A proper fraction is a fraction with the numerator smaller than the denominator. To convert a mixed number into an improper fraction, multiply the the integer (or whole number) by the denominator and then add the result to the numerator to get the numerator for the new fraction, and then keep the denominator the same. So for example: 4 2/3 = (4 x 3) + 2 = 14/3.
